How to transfer the license!
I bought the App Store version about a year ago and it stopped working in February. I could not get the workaround to work as explained by the developer in his YouTube video so I emailed the developer but did not get a response, so I gave up. Fast forward to today; I decided to give it another shot and this time it worked.
I think I know what the issue was that caused it to not work previously. Here is the thing: follow the developer’s steps in his video EXACTLY.
His steps are 1) install App Store version and run once. Quit. 2) Download trial version from website and run once. A prompt will say license has been transferred. Quit. 3) Copy downloaded app. Open Finder. Go to Applications folder. Paste app. A dialog will ask if you want to overwrite the app. Say yes.
The key is to *overwrite the App Store version.*
At some point in step 2, OS X gave me a prompt that is not in the video (must be an older version of OS X in the video), asking me if I wanted Finder to move the app to the Applications folder for me. I think in the past I must have said Yes. I chose No this time and manually copied and pasted the downloaded app into the Applications folder as per the developer’s video, overwriting the App Store version. This has done the trick. aText is working.
It’s been a long time since I tried to get Atext to work before now, so the only other possibility that may have been the trick is that I may have manually deleted aText preferences when I was manually removing another app. I don’t remember doing this but I do remember I was deleting another app’s preferences so I could try the trial again and I may have seen aText files at that time and just deleting them thinking I would never use them again. App preferences are typically in ~/ Library / Preferences. It’s much more likely that manually overwriting the App Store version of aText was the solution though.
I hope this helps people!
